The mission of Reston Stars is to increase access for economically disadvantaged Reston youth to participate in performing arts enrichment programs.
Local performance programs are available at no or low cost, but these opportunities are limited, especially for performing arts camps. Excellent programs exist, but their tuition is expensive for many families, reinforcing inequities in the arts. Students from less-privileged families should not miss out on performing arts exposure, which can inspire and prepare students for higher levels of skill and performance. These experiences should be available to all demographics of students, regardless of their family’s budget.
Reston Stars is a charity project led by South Lakes students through CORE Foundation, a Reston 501(c)(3) non-profit. All donations go to CORE Foundation to support Reston Stars scholarships that allow low-income students to participate in performing arts programs.
Reston Stars is a CORE Cause fiscally sponsored by the CORE Foundation EIN # 20-5997764. Donations are tax deductible to the furthest extent of the law.
In 2023, Reston Stars was founded by South Lakes High School senior August Rivers as part of his IB CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) project, with the support of his co-founders, Itsuko Scoville (junior) and Liam Birch (sophomore).
